Wellbeing Matters

Specialist Support For Your Child

Recent statistics indicate that 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 are likely to have a mental health challenge. Without appropriate understanding and action, these challenges can quickly become barriers to learning, resulting in further mental health issues or education refusal.

At My Online Schooling, we are committed to offering the very best school experience for your child. Our staff members receive regular training on many areas of mental health, SEND, and wellbeing to ensure you, your child and your family are supported as much as possible throughout your journey with us.

We are proud to offer a range of wellbeing support options to help pupils achieve success in their learning, but most importantly learn what success means to them.

One-to-One School Counselling

Sometimes it can be difficult to express how we are feeling to those who know us best. Being able to talk openly with somebody neutral, calm and compassionate can make a world of difference, particularly during times of high stress and anxiety. We offer a dedicated school counselling service for pupils who need a little extra support or guidance.

School Counselling Service Details

Our counselling sessions are available to our enrolled pupils only. Sessions are available to book in blocks of 4 (with an option to book an additional block of 2 sessions if required). Each session is 50 minutes.

The initial free consultation call is an opportunity to outline any challenges your child is experiencing and discuss concerns or issues you feel the counsellor needs to be aware of.

How to Sign Up

Your child can sign up and access our One-to-one Support via My Online Schooling Parent App.

Vanessa Baker
Vanessa Baker

Head of Wellbeing

I graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Psychology which gave me a deeper understanding of child development and mental health.

While studying, I worked with Lothian Autistic Society as a support worker. In this role I helped children build up their independence by working closely with them to set and achieve goals which would help develop key life skills. After graduating, I worked in a primary school supporting children with a variety of additional support needs. These needs included autism, ADHD, social emotional challenges and physical disabilities. I provided individualised support to help children access the curriculum, develop social skills and tools for emotional regulation. This experience helped me to further my knowledge of additional needs and mental health in young people.

As the Head of Wellbeing, I am here to oversee and support our pupils’ mental health and wellbeing. I work with parents and teachers to ensure pupils are getting the support that they need to access the curriculum. I also work with pupils to share strategies that they can use to support their own mental health and wellbeing

The thing I love most about working at MOS is that the wellbeing of our pupils is so important to all of the teachers and staff. Teachers and staff at MOS are committed to ensuring that pupils are happy and that they are thriving in education.

Outside of work, I enjoy meeting up with family and friends and going on walks with my dog, Bailey!

School Counsellor

My first degree was in Sociology and my original career was in research project management in the Civil Service. After starting my family I retrained as a Special Educational Needs teacher in the Further Education sector. I completed a PGCE and undertook a Level 5 certificate in teaching learners with additional needs and have taught learners with a range of Specific Learning Differences and Learning Disabilities. I have a particular interest in working with young people with neurodiverse conditions, particularly Autism Spectrum Conditions and ADHD.

The pastoral side of education is of particular interest to me and in 2017 I returned to university to undertake an MSc in Counselling Children and Young People, which I completed in 2019. I am fully accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work as a specialist counsellor for children and young people, delivering counselling sessions to children and young people between the ages of 5 and 21.

I am trained and qualified to practice emotion-focussed creative therapies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Person-centred therapy (PCT) and deliver counselling sessions both in-person and online. I have worked in secondary schools and community counselling services delivering one to one counselling sessions and group sessions on topics such as anxiety management, resilience, self-care, wellbeing and staying safe online. I have also taught CPCAB counselling skills courses to adult learners.

Outside of work I am kept busy with my family which includes two Secondary school-aged daughters, a very active Springer Spaniel and a collection of rabbits and guinea pigs. I believe that physical wellbeing correlates strongly with good mental health and I love to stay active through walking, going to the gym and Canicross (running with my dog).
